‘Enemy’ and ‘Tom at the Farm’ lead Canadian Screen Awards film nominations

The 2014 Canadian Screen Awards announced this year’s batch of film, television, and digital nominees on Monday morning.

Denis Villeneuve’s hypnotic thriller “Enemy” starring Jake Gyllenhaal leads the pack with a total of ten nominations (including Best Picture and Best Director), followed by Xavier Dolan’s “Tom at the Farm” (with eight noms), and Louise Archambault’s “Gabrielle” (with seven total). The other Best Picture nominees include “Empire of Dirt,” “The Dismantling,” “The F Word,” “The Grand Seduction,” and “Maina.” It’s a great mix of English and French-language fare.

“Enemy” double lead Gyllenhaal (he plays a man and his exact double in the film) is one of three high-profile international stars nominated for the Best Actor trophy. Daniel Radcliffe (“The F Word”) and Brendan Gleeson (“The Grand Seduction”) are also up for the award. Quebec native Gabriel Arcand (brother of director Denys Arcand) is the lone Canadian in the running for the prize.

Canadian performers dominate the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress categories this year, though. “Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany is up for Best Actress for her comedic turn in “Cas & Dylan.” Maslany joins newcomers Cara Gee (“Empire of Dirt”) and Gabrielle Marion-Rivard (star of the acclaimed “Gabrielle”) in the category. Elsewhere, Jay Baruchel ("The Art of the Steal"), Gordon Pinsent ("The Grand Seduction"), and Pierre-Yves Cardinal ("Tom at the Farm") earned Best Supporting Actor nominations, and Sarah Gadon ("Enemy"), Jennifer Podemski ("Empire of Dirt"), Evelyne Brochu ("Tom at the Farm"), and Mackenzie Davis ("The F Word") round out the Best Supporting Actress category.

Formerly known as the Genies and Geminis, the CSAs launched as an amalgam of the two awards shows in 2013. Funny man Martin Short will return to host again this year. The Canadian Screen Awards gala takes place at Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts and will be broadcast live on March 9.
