Electronica band M83 set to score Tom Cruise’s ‘Oblivion’

Filmmaker Joseph Kosinski sure likes his French electronic music!

The "Tron: Legacy" director who famously employed the musical duo Daft Punk to score Disney's cyberpunk sequel/reboot, just announced that another French electronica act would be providing the music for his new film "Oblivion."

According to Playlist, Kosinski has tapped electro-pop band M83 to score the secretive sci-fi epic. Known for their unique, genre-bending sounds, M83 has garnered a great deal of success and critical acclaim in recent years. Their most recent album, "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming," made numerous music critics' "best of the year" lists in 2011. Their otherworldly sound will likely complement Kosinski's equally out there visuals. Hear a sample of M83's work below.

Other than the fact that "Oblivion" is is based on a comic book written by Kosinski (due out later this year) and stars Tom Cruise, not much is actually known about the film at this point. Kosinski has spoken about the comic and shown small snippets of footage and concept art at a few conventions, but like his last film, "Tron," the project remains very secretive.

Here's what is known: the upcoming comic book series and film are set in a distant future where the surface of the Earth has become unlivable and what remains of humanity lives high above the clouds in protective structures. Cruise stars as Commander Jack Harper, a glorified repairman who lives in the skies above Earth and travels to the planet's surface to maintain defensive robotic drones. What are the drones defending against? Warring alien races are said to figure into the story somehow, but exactly how they come into play remains unclear.

It sounds interesting and will likely sound awesome thanks to M83, but Kosinski has yet to prove himself to be a compelling storyteller. "Tron: Legacy" was beautiful to to behold and a wonder to hear, but it was also kind of a mess in the story department. Far be it for us to ask that our big budget sci-fi movies actually pull their weight on the story side of things. We're looking at you "Prometheus!"

"Oblivion" is currently well into its six month shoot and is due to be released in April of next year.
