‘Dumb and Dumber 2′ in development, with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels on board

It's hard to believe that the cult comedy "Dumb and Dumber" is nearly 20 years old. The slapstick Farrelly brothers classic helped launch the careers of comedian Jim Carrey and proved that co-star Jeff Daniels -- who had previously done mostly dramatic work -- had some serious comedic chops. Carrey, obviously, went on to become one of Hollywood's highest paid actors and Daniels has continued to turn in great performances to this day. But there was something about their iconic performances as titular dolts Harry and Lloyd that left audiences wanting more.

Well want no more, dumb-hards. While promoting their latest film, "The Three Stooges," the Farrellys confirmed that a sequel, "Dumb and Dumber 2," will shoot in September with both Carrey and Daniels set to reprise their roles. According to one half of the directing duo, Peter Farrelly, a "Dumb and Dumber" sequel was inevitable since everyone involved with the original absolutely couldn't wait to do it again.

"Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, 'We've got to do this thing again,'" Farrelly told Comingsoon.net.

Amazingly, "Dumb and Dumber 2" will be the first sequel the brothers have ever done. And while word of another "sequel" may be the most annoying sound in the world to some, the prospect of seeing Carrey and Daniels back in action as the criminally stupid Harry and Lloyd some 20 years on has got to be appealing to fans of the original.

The sequel should not to be confused with the unfortunate 2003 prequel "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd," a film that neither the Farrellys nor the original stars were involved with. The critically reviled "comedy" nearly ruined the legacy of the original film, and the Farrellys are quick to distance themselves from it.

"We did not do 'Dumb and Dumberer,'" said Peter Farrelly. "That was a studio thing."

The legitimate continuation of the "Dumb and Dumber" saga -- starring both Carrey and Daniels -- will start shooting in September with a 2013 release date in mind.
