‘Dark Knight Rises’ trailer to play before ‘Avengers’?

No, sadly the Dark Knight will not be joining Marvel's superteam anytime soon (he's more of a Justice League guy, anyway). But according to Deadline, the final theatrical trailer for the latest Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises," will appear before screenings of "The Avengers" upon its May 4 release. And there was much fanboy/fangirl rejoicing.

This epic superhero marketing team-up is an unlikely pairing, since comic publishers DC and Marvel —- and, in turn, movie studios Warner Bros. and Walt Disney —- have been serious rivals since the dawn of their respective mediums. However, the joint marketing push is sure to be a benefit to both films, raising the already high profile blockbusters to levels of hype never before seen. Comic book fans get a double dose of two of this year's biggest superpowered films, and the studios see increased box office as a result. It's win-win.

This isn't the first time the Caped Crusader has teamed up with a rival. Warner Bros. joined forces with Paramount late last year when they debuted the IMAX prologue in front of the competitor's tentpole release "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol." The Bat-prologue gave the already solid "M:I 4" a noticeable boost at the box office.

However, if the world's greatest detective joined any group of superheroes, it would be DC's own Justice League. A Justice League movie has been in the works at Warner Bros. for close to a decade, but the disappointing box office performance of their non-Batman DC movies has slowed the development process considerably. The film will only happen if Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" and "Green Lantern 2" prove a success for the studio.

Marvel and Disney, on the other hand, are laughing all the way to the bank. "The Avengers" is the culmination of numerous films and years of setup. Their superhero supergroup movie is poised to become yet another box office smash for the company.

"The Avengers" flies into theatres on May 4 and "The Dark Knight Rises" will arrive on July 20.
