New ‘Cosmopolis’ trailer: Robert Pattinson goes off the deep end

The David Cronenberg we all know and love might be back, if the full-length trailer for his new film "Cosmopolis" is to be believed. And Cronenberg has brought "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson along for the twisted and horrible ride.

The Canadian director rose to fame in the 1980s with so-called "body horror" films like "Scanners," "Videodrome," and "The Fly," but he has moved closer to the mainstream with recent movies like "A History of Violence," "Eastern Promises," and "A Dangerous Method." His contemporary work still retains the disturbing edge the filmmaker has become known for, but many longtime admirers of his work say something is lacking.

Despite being the "first film about our new millennium" (according to the trailer), "Cosmopolis" looks to be a return to Cronenberg's original form — dark, sleazy, and troubling fare.

Based on the novel of the same name by Don DeLillo, "Cosmopolis" follows young millionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) on an odyssey across New York City. Much of the film takes place inside Packer's decked-out limousine, as his journey is interrupted by parades, protests, traffic, funerals, and all sorts of eccentric characters. The film co-stars Jay Baruchel ("Goon"), Paul Giamatti ("Barney's Version"), Juliette Binoche, Kevin Durand, and Toronto's own Sarah Gadon ("A Dangerous Method").

After an extremely racy (and very not safe for work) teaser trailer was released last month, a full-length trailer for the film dropped this past weekend. You can watch the most recent trailer below:

Many believe that the Cronenberg film is Pattinson's opportunity to break free of the "Twilight" mould and prove himself as a capable nonvampire lead. In that respect, the film is off to a very good start: "Cosmopolis" is set to debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival next month, where it will compete for the fest's top prize, the Palme d'Or. A North American release date has still not been announced.
