The Coen Bros. to rewrite Angelina Jolie’s survival movie ‘Unbroken’

Finding the right script and screenwriter can be a challenge for any up-and-coming filmmaker. But if you’re a promising new director who also happens to be one of the biggest movie stars in the world, finding that top-notch screenplay and scribe is no problem!

According to the Hollywood Reporter, actress-turned-filmmaker Angelina Jolie (“In the Land of Blood and Honey”) has landed two of the world’s most renowned film writers – the Coen brothers – to rewrite the script for her sophomore effort “Unbroken.” The Academy Award winning writer/director duo behind such films as "Fargo," "No Country for Old Men," and "True Grit" rarely write scripts that they themselves don’t end up directing (with the rare exceptions being last year’s “Gambit” and George Clooney’s still-in-development “Suburbicon”), so Jolie scoring the brothers is a huge coup -- even for someone as famous as her.

Based on author Laura Hillenbrand’s non-fiction book of the same name, “Unbroken” follows the harrowing story of Second World War hero Louis Zamperini, a former Olympic athlete who survived a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean, 47 days adrift at sea, and two years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. The almost unbelievable true story is perfect fodder for a major Hollywood movie.

Director Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) director was originally hired by Universal to helm “Unbroken,” but left the project after being tapped to direct the next two “Hunger Games” sequels. Jolie has reportedly been searching for quality screenwriters to improve the film’s existing script since taking on the film in December. Joel and Ethan Coen are about the best possible scribes anyone could hope for. Jolie's partner Brad Pitt previously worked with the Coens on the 2008 black comedy "Burn After Reading," and it's probably safe to assume that the acquaintance of the Hollywood power couple and the brothers may have been instrumental in bringing the Coens aboard "Unbroken."

Although it was very well received, Jolie's previous film “In the Land of Blood and Honey" only saw a very limited theatrical release. "Unbroken" will be the first chance for most moviegoers to see if Jolie has filmmaking talents to match her considerable acting chops.
