‘Breaking Bad’ star Bryan Cranston in the running for Lex Luthor in ‘Superman/Batman’?

While most of the casting speculation surrounding the upcoming “Superman vs. Batman” movie has centered on who will play the Dark Knight, studio Warner Bros. is also rumoured to be on the hunt for an actor to play bald baddie Lex Luthor.

These days, when the words “bald” and “bad” come up in Hollywood, there’s really only one actor who springs to mind: “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston. According to a blind item posted by Latino Review on Twitter, the 57-year-old Emmy-winner is apparently high on the studio’s list of potential actors to play Superman’s arch nemesis in Zack Snyder’s still untitled “Man of Steel” follow-up.

Since hitting it big as Walter White on AMC’s award-winning crime saga “Breaking Bad,” Cranston has become a familiar face on the big screen, with supporting roles in movies like “Contagion” and “Argo” and villainous turns in summer tentpoles like “John Carter” and “Total Recall.” However, the iconic Lex Luthor role – a part previously been played by cinematic greats like Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey – would be Cranston’s biggest baddie role to date.

Not familiar with Luthor? If you’ve ever seen a Superman movie, you’re probably at least vaguely familiar with the character, who has appeared opposite the Man of Steel in a total of four films. A billionaire industrialist and genius scientist, Luthor is a megalomaniac obsessed with ridding the world of Superman – mostly because the extraterrestrial hero so often foils his nefarious plans for world domination. While ostensibly a Superman villain, Luthor has often come into conflict with other DC Comics superheroes like Batman and the rest of the Justice League.

All the Cranston as Lex Luthor talk is still very much rumour territory for now (it’s not even known how or even if the famed supervillain will figure into the “Superman vs. Batman” movie, but it’s likely), the actor does have all the requisite qualities to play Superman's arch nemesis. Cranston is an award-winning actor with name recognition, he can play bald, complex villains (Luthor is a famously hairless and layered character), and he's had a fruitful relationship with Warner Bros. in recent years.

But Cranston isn't the only actor in the mix. His new AMC network colleague Mark Strong ("Kick-Ass," "Low Winter Sun") is also said to be in contention for the Luthor role. When asked about the possibility of playing Luthor, Strong told Digital Spy to "watch this space." The Luthor role has put Strong, Cranston, and presumably every other follically-challenged, middle-aged actor in Hollywood on WB's radar. Only time will tell who gets to take on both Superman and Batman in summer 2015.

Who do you want to see play Lex Luthor in "Superman vs. Batman"?
