Anonymous celebrity reportedly orders $100K mattress for TIFF

Celebrities: They're just like us! They walk their dogs, go grocery shopping, have wardrobe malfunctions, sleep on $100,000 beds...

Wait, what?

If the red carpets and gorgeous gowns of the Toronto International Film Festival don't make the average Canadian feel like a bit of a Dumpy Debbie, have we got a story for you. The luxurious lodging of The Hazelton Hotel in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood, a popular choice for celebrities in town for TIFF, recently revealed that a handmade Hästens mattress has been flown in from Sweden to rest in one of its penthouse suites. The particular model of mattress, the Hästens Vividus, costs a cool $99,900.

For a little perspective, the average Canadian would have to devote more than two years of their income to purchase one of the handmade mattresses. And one bed takes between 140 and 160 hours to put together, with "only the finest natural materials" like horsehair, cotton, flax and wool, and each is personally signed by its craftsman. Hästens calls the bed "a true masterpiece."

The Hazelton's general manager, David Mounteer, said in a press release that moments like these make TIFF worth all the effort.

"TIFF represents the pinnacle achievement for our guest services team," Mounteer said. "Our team will go above and beyond to make sure that all their needs are met."

But who, exactly, is Mounteer referring to when he says "their needs are met"? He wouldn't name names in the press release, but stars like Bono, Madonna, Jon Hamm, Bill Murray, Blake Lively, and George Clooney have all been spotted at The Hazelton in previous years.

Celebrities work hard during TIFF, so a good night's sleep is often well-deserved. But apparently, The Hazelton thinks there's enough demand for a six-figure mattress all year round.

"While we will never reveal which one of our A-List guests ordered the bed, we can tell you that the experience has a positive note, as we will be extending our relationship with Hästens to secure their products within our suite mix," said Mounteer.

That's good news for us humble Canadians. Soon, with a night's stay in one of Hazelton's suites, we can sleep like the stars, too!
