When he’s not fighting fictional legal battles over a famous social network or saving Manhattan in the guise of a Marvel superhero, “Amazing Spider-Man” star Andrew Garfield apparently enjoys a quick game of basketball between takes.

The 29-year-old Brit recently brought new meaning to the catchphrase “your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man” while filming “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in New York. Garfield was spotted playing a pick-up game of basketball with two young boys.

Although Garfield never removes his mask in the video (he wouldn’t want to reveal his secret identity, after all), his co-star and real-life girlfriend Emma Stone can be seen watching from the sidelines in another vid posted by the same user.

With the potential of three villains for the web-slinger to square off against in the upcoming Spider-sequel (Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Paul Giamatti’s Rhino, and possibly Chris Cooper’s Green Goblin), you’d think the Peter Parker actor would want to save his energy on location. But with so much downtime between setups on the average Hollywood set, is it any wonder that Garfield decided to go shoot some hoops and give a few young fans a thrill in the process?

The actor’s off-camera Spidey appearance is just one of many recent examples of Hollywood stars appearing in public as their big screen alter egos. When the real Queen Elizabeth II was unable to visit with a sick admirer, Oscar-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren reportedly reprised her royal role to meet the young boy for tea in the Monarch’s stead (the veteran thesp is currently playing the Queen on stage in London’s West End). Similarly, “Hellboy” actor Ron Perlman made a wish come true for an ill young fan last year, donning his demonic costume and makeup for a memorable meet and greet. “Pirates of the Caribbean” star Johnny Depp has also reportedly made children’s hospital visits in his full Captain Jack Sparrow getup.

Garfield’s Spidey can be seen off the court when “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” hits theatres on May 2, 2014.
