New ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ set photos don’t bode well for [spoiler!]

Director Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is currently shooting in New York City, and while fans still don’t know much about the upcoming superhero movie, a number of photo leaks have revealed some major information about the film.

Warning: This post contains possible spoilers for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2.' Don't click through if you don't want to know.

Pictures from the set have already shown the electrifying transformation Jamie Foxx’s character Max Dillon undergoes in the movie, and now new shots of star Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy have potentially revealed a major plot twist.

The seemingly innocuous photos of Stone looking forlornly off into NYC’s East River would be unremarkable -- if not for the outfit the actress was wearing. Ladies' clothing is not normally on the radar of the average comic book fan, but Stone’s duds here immediately set off alarm bells for long time Spider-Man fans.

After actress Shailene Woodley was cast as Peter Parker’s other love interest Mary Jane Watson in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," many fans had their own theories about what would happen to Stone's character. And Stone’s costume in these photos indicates that Webb has likely based the sequel around the infamous “Night Gwen Stacy Died” comic book storyline. Her long coat and high boots are almost identical to the ones worn by the character in the 1973 Spider-Man story, which saw baddie Green Goblin murder Spidey’s girlfriend by throwing her off the Brooklyn Bridge.

Director Sam Raimi riffed on this famous comic book scene in the 2002 version of “Spider-Man,” when Spidey and the Green Goblin battled it out on New York’s Queensboro Bridge. In Raimi’s version – which has a much happier ending - Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson stood in for Gwen Stacy (who wouldn’t appear in the movies until “Spider-Man 3”).

The presence of the fateful costume and Stacy's unfortunate proximity to the river tell us two things: One, that Gwen Stacy's days are probably numbered, and two, that Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) may be donning the Green Goblin outfit in the "Amazing Spider-Man" sequel. Between Cooper's Osborn/The Green Goblin, Foxx's Electro, and Paul Giamatti's Rhino, the film's roster of baddies keeps expanding. Spider-Man will have his work cut out for him.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" swings into theatres on May 2, 2014.
