The 7 Bane-iest responses from Tom Hardy’s Reddit AMA

"Dark Knight Rises" star Tom Hardy stopped by Reddit this week to take part in an "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) session. Hardy, who is probably best known for his portrayal of the villainous Bane in the final Dark Knight film, hit the popular social news site along with director Steven Knight to promote their upcoming film “Locke.”

Perhaps it wasn't surprising that many of the questions posed to Hardy were about his performance in "The Dark Knight Rises" -- and, always a good sport, Hardy answered much as Bane would. Here are seven of the "Bane-iest" answers from Hardy during his AMA:

All part of the plan
Redditor pseudo_sloth kicked off the discussion by asking Hardy if doing the AMA was part of his plan. Recognizing the “Dark Knight Rises” reference, the actor replied in character: “Of course.”

“First one to talk gets to stay on my aircraft!”
Another Redditor took the opportunity to ask Hardy the very same question Bane posed to Aidan Gillan’s CIA Agent character in the opening moments of “The Dark Knight Rises”: “Why would someone shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane?”

Hardy's ready-made Bane response: “To make sure he's dead, I suppose.”

On working with Christopher Nolan
When asked what it was like working for his “Inception” and “Dark Knight Rises” director Christopher Nolan, the actor called the filmmaker a “grandmaster” and demonstrated some serious Bane-like tenacity when describing the lengths he would go to to work with the filmmaker again: “If he asked me to read a shopping list off the back of a flipflop, I would eat through my own underpants to get to him," Hardy answered. "That's what it was like.”

Career advice
When asked what advice he had for aspiring artists and young people, Hardy wrote a lengthy and extremely thoughtful response. But as a follow-up, the actor’s equally thoughtful reply could have easily been uttered by Bane. The comment takes on new life when read in the voice of his “Dark Knight Rises” character: “NEVER, ever be afraid or ashamed of making a mistake. The only mistake you can make is not making the effort to make a mistake for fear of shame or humiliation or anything.”

Pancakes vs. Waffles
As is usually the case on Reddit, the questions got a little strange. One user asked Hardy whether he would eat pancakes or waffles, and much like Bane might, the actor chose the answer no one was expecting: “When somebody waffles, they talk a lot of s$&#, and a pancake is something you can eat. I'd go for a crepe.”

You talkin’ to me?
When asked which television shows he watched as a kid, Hardy momentarily bucked his tough guy image by mentioning Australian soap operas “Neighbors” and “Home and Away.” But he quickly followed up by revealing that he spent a lot of time with a certain Martin Scorsese classic: “And I used to watch ‘Taxi Driver’ and things my father said I couldn't.”

It’s unsurprising that the man who brought moviegoers intense big screen characters like Charles Bronson and Bane took pointers from one of the most intimidating cinematic characters of all time: Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle.

Wanna fight?
Hardy earned high praise from critics for his portrayal of mixed martial arts fighter Tommy Riordan in the 2011 film “Warrior.” Several Redditors took the opportunity to express their admiration for Hardy’s performance in the film, to which the actor replied with a gracious but slightly threatening response that nicely encapsulated the entire conversation: “Thank you very much! Wanna fight?”

“Locke” arrives in Canadian theatres on May 9.
