Beane employs computer-generated statistical analysis -- with the help of brainy, number-crunching, Yale-educated economist Peter Brand -- to draft overlooked players and develop a roster of misfits. Despite opposition from the old guard, the media, fans and their own field manager, this bold experiment will forever change the way the game is played.
