The ‘Harry Potter’ Trio’s First Screen Test: Such Cute Little Wizards

What is perhaps most remarkable about Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, the three actors whose runs as the leads in the "Harry Potter" series will finally end next month, is how normal they turned out to be. Considering the exploits of child actors in the past, and the unprecedented attention and pressure each of the three received at such a young age, it's sort of amazing that they all seem relatively healthy and intelligent people today. To grow up in the public eye like that, knowing at the age of 11 that you'd be associated with a fictional character the rest of your life, and still having it together more than a decade later ... it's impressive.

The series has grossed more than $2 billion domestically, and those three have been at the center the whole time. So as it ends, Warner Bros. helpfully brings us back to the beginning with a brief glimpse of the actors' first screen test.

It is awfully cute, featuring the then-preteens practicing the scene when Hermione explains to a dubious Harry and Ron what, in fact, this "Sorcerer's Stone" is. And it is kind of striking how much they look like their current, adult selves, who are finishing off a decade-spanning blockbuster franchise and heading off to college and Broadway and such.

The "Harry Potter" series, with those three, is almost like Michael Apted's "7 Up" series, in which we watch various people grow older right in front of us. Except these movies have dragons and wizards and sorting hats. Much better.
