Is Something Missing From the ‘Divergent’ Teaser Trailer?

If "Divergent" is an adaptation of a young adult novel, something must be missing from the first look footage that premiered during the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show on Sunday.

Where's the other guy?

If "The Hunger Games," "Twilight," and even "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" have taught us anything, it's that a young adult adaptation must have a love triangle. But the "Divergent" teaser only shows us one gentleman caller – Four, played by the appropriately disarmingly handsome Theo James. There's also a distinct lack of pining going on. What gives?

Well, folks, "Divergent" certainly isn't "Twilight." Despite it's dystopian setting and white-haired bad guy (in this case, Kate Winslet's Jeanine Matthews), it's definitely not "The Hunger Games." For starters, yeah, there's no love triangle.

Also, sorry Cinna-files, but there's no crazy Capitol dress code either. While each of the five factions of author Veronica Roth's future Chicago has a distinct style, most are simplistic and pared down. No Effie Trinket wigs and gold eyeliner here.

Instead of makeup and pomp and circumstance, we get action. Lots of it.

Shortly after her 16th birthday, our heroine Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is tested to determine in which of the five virtue-based factions she belongs: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peace), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery) and Erudite (intelligence). Tris, who was born into Abnegation but chooses to join Dauntless, shows an aptitude for three, thus making her Divergent … and at risk of being killed.

"You're different. You don't fit into a category. They can't control you. They call it 'divergent.' You can't let them find out about you," Maggie Q's Tori explains. If people find out, "then you're already dead."

"The system removes the threat of anyone exercising their independent will," we hear in Winslet's chilling voice over. "Divergents threaten that system. It won't be safe until they're removed."

In addition to learning how to fit into her new faction – that knife scene at the end of the clip is just an average day of Dauntless training – we'll be getting a ton of fist, foot, and elbow-flying combat for survival … no fangs or bow and arrow necessary.

"Divergent" arrives in theaters on March 21, 2014. The third and final novel in Roth's bestselling series, "Allegiant," hits bookshelves on October 22, 2013.
