Exclusive: ‘Tyler Perry’s Temptation’ trailer’s unlikely star, Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian is acting in a Tyler Perry movie about marriage.

Let’s repeat that so it really sinks in.

Kim Kardashian. Acting. In a Tyler Perry movie. About marriage.

Yes, those are four concepts that each seem completely at odds with each other. Kardashian has a pretty limited list of film credits – including a Razzie nomination for her movie debut in 2008’s “Disaster Movie.” Her tabloid headlining past wouldn’t seem to fit with Tyler Perry’s trademark brand of faith-based storytelling. And as far as marriage goes, having 72 days of experience doesn’t exactly qualify one as an expert.

But Kardashian’s role in “Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor” might not actually be that bad a fit. In the trailer which premiered exclusively here on Yahoo! Movies, you see Kardashian is playing a character who is stylish, bossy, and has a strong interest in the dating habits of rich and powerful men. Does that sound like anyone you know?

The movie is about Judith (Jurnee Smollett-Bell, all grown up from her “Eve’s Bayou” days), an Ivy League-educated married woman who wants to be a marriage counselor but is stuck working in a matchmaking agency for high-powered men run by Janice (Vanessa L.. Williams). Her rival at the office is Ava (Kardashian) who is overly critical of Judith’s appearance and personal style (Kardashian does seem more at ease talking about fashion than "the largest social media inventor since Zuckerberg"). But then Judith finds her own marriage in trouble when she comes under the spell of a new client, the successful and charming Harley (Robbie Jones).

The casting of Kardashian was fairly controversial among Tyler Perry’s loyal fans, and so the writer/director took to his personal website to defend his choice. He said that upon finishing the script, “I knew that this message was not only for my age group, but for all audiences, especially the youth.” He wrote that he looked for a figure that young people looked up to and wanted to emulate, and ended up on Kardashian, who currently has nearly 17 million followers on Twitter.

Perry wrote, “If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here.”

Sounds like Perry also wants to cast Kardashian in an even more unlikely part: being a role model.

Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor” opens March 29.
