Exclusive: ‘On the Road’ trailer shows off Kristen Stewart’s fearlessly revealing role

Kristen Stewart is out to show she is one of the mad ones, at least on screen, in "On the Road," the long-awaited movie adaptation of Kerouac's seminal novel of the 1950s. She stars as Marylou, who travels with her ex-husband Dean Moriarty (played by Garrett Hedlund) and his pal, the young writer Sal Paradise (Sam Riley). Marylou is drawn to both men and the alluring freedom of the road, and the just-released trailer above shows that Stewart doesn't shy away from the film's revealing scenes.

At the film's world premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Stewart said that she "wanted to do" the racy moments in the movie, which include appearing topless in a car between Hedlund and Riley. She told reporters, "I love pushing; I love scaring myself."

Stewart has said that Kerouac's semi-autobiographical recounting of the early years of the Beat Generation was her favorite book. The Hollywood Reporter revealed she took a drastically reduced salary -- about 1% of her reported $20 million paycheck for "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" -- for the opportunity of playing a part in the low-budget production.

The film's director, Walter Salles ("The Motorcycle Diaries"), said he was interested in casting Stewart based on her performance in 2007's "Into the Wild," before she was even cast as Bella Swan in "Twilight." To prepare for this project, Salles brought the cast together for a four-week "boot camp" where they immersed themselves in the films, books and jazz music of the '50s period. Stewart said at Cannes that the prep time with her costars helped her get past her usual self-consciousness. She said, "I really loved it. I got to live more in those four weeks than... in a normal lifetime."

Stewart's notoriety added complications for film production, with her constantly being hounded by fans and the paparazzi. Security had to be especially tight, of course, for when she was filming her nude scenes. But she told The Hollywood Reporter the actual shooting didn't faze her. Stewart said, "I was so shocked at being able to do it... I didn't feel naked."

The film is set to screen next Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival in a different version than how it premiered at Cannes. Approximately 15 minutes were cut from its running time, with scenes deleted and some additional footage restored. Stewart is set to appear on the red carpet for the premiere, her first public appearance since her recent tabloid scandal. But if anything can get people to stop talking about her private love life, it might very well be her on-screen one.
