Clark Griswold wears the pants in a ‘Christmas Vacation’-themed ad

Christmas Vacation

Clark Griswold, as portrayed by Chevy Chase, was the world's most enthusiastic family man. In 1989's "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," Griswold attempted to cover every square inch of his home with Christmas lights. Hilarity ensued. The scene has been re-created (sort of) in a new Old Navy commercial that reunites Chase with costars Beverly D'Angelo and Juliette Lewis. "The Big Bang Theory" star Johnny Galecki, who played the son Rusty in the movie, does not appear in the ad, but Martin Short, who costarred with Chase in "Three Amigos," does the voice-over.

In the ad, Chase, who recently left the hit sitcom "Community," struggles with an excessive number of extension cords while his uninterested family looks on. Finally, success. But instead of the house emitting enough light to rival the sun, the members of the Griswold family see their pants begin to change colors. Hey, it's an ad, not high art.

Astute fans of all things Griswold may remember that Chase and D'Angelo reunited several years ago for another ad. That one, for HomeAway vacation rentals, featured Clark and Ellen in their metallic pea family truckster. The pair also appeared in "Family Guy's" "Star Wars" spoof.

Chase, D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, and Dana Barron, the stars of the original "Vacation" film, also recently reunited for an Entertainment Weekly cover in honor of that film's (almost) 30th anniversary.
