Charlize Theron feels ‘Sympathy For Lady Vengeance’

Charlize Theron is preparing to embark on what the movie advertisements refer to as a "roaring rampage of revenge."

That nod to Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill Vol. 2" comes from news that the "Prometheus" star has signed on to follow in the footsteps of Uma Thurman's The Bride as a gorgeous blonde who's been done wrong and looking for a little payback in the American remake of "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance."

The original 2005 Korean film, often referred to simply as "Lady Vengeance," is the third entry in director Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy, following "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance" (2002) and "Oldboy" (2003). The story follows Lee Geum-ja (Lee Young Ae), a woman convicted of murdering a young schoolboy who, upon being released from a lengthy prison sentence, goes after Mr. Baek (Choi Min-sik), the real killer who kidnapped and threatened to murder her newborn daughter if she refused to confess to the crime.

The new "Lady Vengeance" marks the second American remake of a Chan-wook film, following Spike Lee's upcoming take on arguably the best installment in the Vengeance Trilogy, "Oldboy." The story of a man (Josh Brolin) who tracks down the person responsible for inexplicably imprisoning him in an isolated room for 15 years (Sharlto Copley) is currently in production with a look toward a release date of October 11, 2013.

Meanwhile, Chan-wook himself is about to unveil an American film of his own, as "Stoker" is set to hit theaters on March 1. The film chronicles the bizarre psychosexual goings-on that occur when a mysterious rogue (Matthew Goode) comes to live with his impressionable niece (Mia Wasikowska) and unstable sister-in-law (Nicole Kidman) after his brother dies.

Anyway, back to our new "Lady Vengeance." Charlize Theron is certainly a good choice for the role, as she can definitely do really angry rather well, as most recently demonstrated by her supervillainous turn as the evil Queen Ravenna in "Snow White and the Huntsman."

"Sympathy For Lady Vengeance" is set to be written by William Monahan ("The Departed"), who certainly seems excited by the project. "Park [Chan-wook] is a genius; it's the Everest of adaptations and I've got blood in my teeth to do it," he said in a press release. Ha, "blood" has been mentioned already!

Stay tuned for news on who will play Theron's nemesis ... and let's hope that this production doesn't experience the casting difficulties that plagued (and delayed) Spike Lee's "Oldboy."
