‘Amour,’ ‘The Master’ honored by Los Angeles Film Critics Association

Awards season continues as the Los Angeles Film Critics Association has announced the winners of the 2012 LACMA Awards.

Last week, "Zero Dark Thirty," director Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to the award-winning "The Hurt Locker" won the top prize at the New York Film Critics Circle and at the National Board of Review, but the LACMA bucked the trend. The organization instead gave its Best Film award to "Amour," writer-director Michael Haneke's heartbreaking drama about an elderly French couple and the crisis that tests their decades-long bond.

The Best Actress win was a tie, going to Emmanuelle Riva for her performance in "Amour" and her generations-younger colleague Jennifer Lawrence for her eccentric turn in David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook."

Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master," a film that many Oscar forecasters are expecting to be too volatile and difficult for the Academy, was a surprise multi-winner, taking home Best Director, Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix), Best Supporting Actress (Amy Adams) and Best Production Design. Meanwhile, "Beasts of the Southern Wild" continues to enchant audiences and critics alike as it received awards for Best Supporting Actor (Dwight Henry), Best Music Score and New Generation (for director Benh Zeitlin).

Other winners include Best Cinemtography for Roger Deakins' work on the latest 007 adventure, "Skyfall"; Best Screenplay for director Ben Affleck's period thriller, "Argo"; Best Animation for Tim Burton's macabre yet whimsical "Frankenweenie"; and Best Foreign Film for the truly bizarre yet undeniably mesmerizing "Holy Motors."

You can view the complete list of winners at the Official Site of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
