Fans, Are You Happy? 'The Giver' Goes Black and White, Officially

When first footage of "The Giver" dropped three weeks ago, fans got irked. Big time.

The film is based on an award-winning 1993 dystopian novel by Lois Lowry and depicts a world where people see in black and white.

The big problem: The trailer, featuring Oscar-winners Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep, was in color.

One fan went so far as to "correct" the problem, posting an altered version to his YouTube page (below) with the note, "There, I fixed it for you."

But now fans needn't worry. Yahoo can confirm, without a colorless shadow of a doubt, that parts of "The Giver" will be in black and white. Film footage in a new featurette, seen here first on Yahoo Movies, shows proof at the 57-second mark (in the video at the top of this post).

UPDATE: Just an hour after posting the new featurette, fans are expressing relief.

In the piece, Jonas aka 'The Reciever,' played by Brenton Thwaties,  enters a room to meet 'The Giver' (Bridges). The black-and-white scene is the key to the plot, revealing the Giver's sea of memories he has to transmit to the Receiver; memories that have been kept from the rest of society, including a world in good ole Technicolor.

"I began to think about how important memory is," author Lowry says in the video, offering an insight to the question at the heart of her novel. "What would happen if we could manipulate human memory?"

Now that the issue of color has been resolved, fans can move on to griping about Thwaties. At 24 years old, he is more than a decade older than the character in the book — who gains the distinction of becoming "Receiver" at the age of 12.

"The Giver," also starring Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgård, and pop star Taylor Swift, opens on Aug. 15.
