How to Watch the Tearjerking Trailer for 'The Fault in Our Stars' Without Becoming a Whimpering Mess

You got a lump in your throat when you first saw the poster for "The Fault in Our Stars" — how are you ever going to make it through a full, two-and-a-half-minute trailer?

You're not. Well, at least not without a little help, which is where we come in.

Below, you'll find the steps for successfully surviving the total tearjerker of a trailer for the highly-anticipated film based on John Green's bestselling novel (which, we might add, was widely considered one of the best books released in 2012) and starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as two teens falling blissfully in love… as they battle cancer.

1. We're all about preparation here at Yahoo, so please go grab two tissues (any brand will do). Maybe three for good measure.

2. Breathe. It's something Hazel Grace Lancaster has difficulty with, so you should appreciate it.

3. Press play.

4. Revel in the perfection of Shailene's opening voiceover: "I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories. On the one hand, you can sugarcoat it, when nothing is too messed up that can't be fixed with a Peter Gabriel song. I like that version as much as the next girl does. It's just not the truth."

For those who haven't read the book, this is a perfect introduction to Hazel Grace, who was diagnosed with stage four thyroid cancer when she was 13, and it has since spread to her lungs. She is equal parts hopeful, funny, and startlingly honest.

5. Swoon a little when Augustus Waters — dressed in his signature leather jacket — introduces himself during a support group session in what Hazel Grace calls "the literal heart of Jesus." He's been in remission for a year and a half and fears "oblivion."

6. Hazel Grace, wearing cannula in her nose and carting around an oxygen tank on wheels: "Why are you staring at me?" Augustus: "Because you're beautiful." Use tissue No. 1.

7. The "grenade" line goes off — you'll need tissue No. 2 now. "One day I'm going to blow up and I'm going to obliterate everything in my wake… and I don't want to hurt you," Hazel Grace explains to Gus. In other words, she sees herself — and her cancer – as a ticking time bomb that could go off at any moment, devastating anyone close to her. Which is why she makes it a point not to get close to anyone.

Gus's eventual response: "All your efforts to keep me from you are going to fail." Given the romantic shots of the pair of them throughout the footage, we'd say he's got a point.

8. Appreciate Shailene's gravely laugh and "Sleeping at Last," by Sun, playing in the background.

9. "You gave me a forever within the numbered days. I can't tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity," Hazel Grace tells Gus. Thank goodness you grabbed that third tissue.

10. "Okay?" "Okay."
