The Daily Bugle Hints at Villains for Future 'Spider-Man' Spinoffs

In "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," the webslinger has more than his share of trouble to handle, with supervillains Electro, Green Goblin, and the Rhino terrorizing New York City. But there are plenty of other threats to the Big Apple, and the Daily Bugle covers them all.

In the comics, the Daily Bugle is the newspaper where Peter Parker is a photographer under editor-in-chief and noted Spider-Man hater J. Jonah Jameson. But on the Web, TheDailyBugle.tumblr.com has been posting stories that both set the stage for the "Amazing Spider-Man" sequel and drop hints about who we might see in the planned villain-centric spin-offs.

Here's your exclusive first look at the Daily Bugle's next scoop, featuring a few names that should be very familiar to Spider-Man's true believers.

KILLER KASADY CAUGHT
By Eddie Brock

The greater New York tri-state area got a whole lot safer yesterday.  Captured late last night, Cletus Kasady, escaped serial killer and notorious redhead, was eerily calm and subdued when he eagerly surrendered to the FBI. The manhunt for the FBI’s Most Wanted felon ended innocuously in a small strip mall outside of New Rochelle, New York.

A barista at a local coffee shop recognized Kasady and eventually called the police.  The barista apologized to reporters later admitting she didn’t immediately alert authorities hoping Spider-Man would beat them to the scene.  “What can I say?  I am a HUGE fan.”

Kasady had been sentenced to twelve life sentences for the twelve murders he committed — but escaped while being transported between federal prisons. Sources say Kasady has been remanded to Ravencroft Institute for further interrogation until he is relocated to a maximum security federal prison. While the barista didn’t get her wish, we know Spider-Man thanks her… as we all do. For now it appears that Kasady won’t be causing any more carnage.

The first thing that's worth noting is the byline on the story: Eddie Brock. In the books, Brock is a journalist for the Bugle with a personal vendetta against Spider-Man who bonds with an alien being called the Symbiote. Together, they become the villain known as Venom, and it was announced last December that the character would be getting his own standalone movie from writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci ("Star Trek") along with Ed Solomon ("Men in Black").

What's even more intriguing for Spidey fans is the subject of Brock's story: convicted murderer Cletus Kasady. As comic readers know, after Spider-Man defeats Venom, Brock is sent to prison where he shares a cell with Kasady, who gets infected with a Symbiote of his own. That transforms the killer into the even more deranged creature called Carnage.

There's a chance we might see Carnage come to the screen as well, perhaps in the "Sinister Six" spinoff that is also in the works. Drew Goddard ("Cabin in the Woods") is reportedly set to write and direct that film which will see a half-dozen of the web-head's greatest foes team up together.

The trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" had hints that comic-book villains Doctor Octopus and Vulture are part of the master plan over at Norman Osborn's nefarious Oscorp. Perhaps Carnage will be filling out the roster.

The Daily Bugle will continue to post stories to Tumblr leading up to the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" on May 2.
