Ice Cube May Be First Star Ever Surprised By Losing at MTV Movie Awards

May the day never come that Ice Cube loses at the Academy Awards — or any other serious awards show.

The "Ride Along" star, 44, got seriously bent out of shape over losing Best On-Screen Duo, with Kevin Hart, at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards. Not only did he declare that he was "robbed" of the award, which went to the "Fast & Furious 6" tandem of Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, he went on to publicly scold the network, saying, "Shame on you MTV... We had the best chemistry of everybody nominated, for us not to win was crazy," and said his competitors won because they had the "sympathy" vote. Eep.

Seems Cube cared a little too much about winning going into the show. Before he even took his seat he seemed to have conspiracy theories on his brain, as noted in this tweet:

Guess he didn't know that the fix was in.

Like the People's Choice Awards, the MTV Movie Award winners names aren't kept top-secret and locked away in the briefcase of an Ernst and Young exec backstage.

Heck, Vin Diesel pretaped his acceptance speech and messengered it to Los Angeles from Europe, where he's shooting "Fast 7." (But show producers opted not to use the emotional clip, dedicated to "my brother" Walker, so Diesel released it yesterday via Facebook.)

And he shouldn't direct all his ire to MTV. Fans vote for the winners, making the prize more of an online popularity contest than an objective, discerned selection of Best Kiss, Best Fight, or, our favorite, Best Scared-as-S--t Performance.

Judging by Facebook alone, the Cube-Hart combo lost that popularity contest by miles. While the "Ride Along" duo — who did break a January box-office record when their film opened over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend and tallied a solid $150 million worldwide — have about 20 million Facebook followers compared to Vin Diesel and Walker's 100 million-plus. ("Fast & Furious 6" grossed nearly $100 million in its first weekend last year on the way to nearly $790 million worldwide.)

Further, it's the MTV Movie Awards. It's fluffy fun. Zac Efron put on his best pretend shocked face when Rita Ora ripped open his shirt on stage. But he was wearing a shirt with snaps on it, folks, making it beyond easy access and hard to believe that wasn't a planned bit. And don't tell us that a makeup artist didn't give those abs the airbrush treatment before the show. For goodness sake, he flexed after being caught "off-guard." And then flexed some more.

There were many talented actors there — including Oscar winner Jared Leto — but we saw through those faux surprised "I won" faces; the MTV winners weren't a mystery.

Speaking of Academy Award recipients, Lupita Nyong'o just won the Oscar for her performance in "12 Years a Slave," but lost the MTV Movie Award. Likewise, Matthew McConaughey ("Dallas Buyers Club") missed out to Josh Hutcherson ("The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"). So Cube is in fine company when it comes to also-rans.

And if Ice Cube cared so much about the outcome, why did he leave early? He admitted that he bailed shortly after arriving, telling USA Today he "just wasn't into it" and was "bored," so went home to watch the Lakers game.

Despite his harsh comments to the newspaper, he was in full backtrack mode Monday, insisting he wasn't really a sore loser.

And despite saying Walker, who died in a fiery car crash over Thanksgiving weekend, had the "sympathy" of voters, Ice Cube said it was really just a case of "'make something out of nothing' a--reporters" twisting his words and that he was "not a sore loser. I was born losing. This winning s--t is what I gotta get use to." He also tweeted specifically to Walker fans, telling them "don't trip. I was a fan too."

Then on Tuesday, he kept spinning, suggesting it was all a big gag while touting the release of the"Ride Along" Blu-ray/DVDs, which went on sale today.

Right. Next time let's hope he embraces the "Ride Along" dynamic and sticks with the straight man role while leaving the funny business to Hart.
