First 'Gone Girl' Trailer Puts Ben Affleck Under Suspicion of Murder

A man's wife is missing. A community is horrified. And it makes national news.

Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, husband of the missing Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), who ineptly smiles at cameras during a press conference while pleading for his wife's safe return  at the one time when stoicism is the preferred expression.

Cut to Nick getting a DNA mouth swab.

Something is up.

"I did not kill my wife. I am not a murderer," asserts Nick (Affleck), as heard at the end of the film's first trailer, which dropped on Monday.

There's more going on in "Gone Girl" than meets the eye in this first footage of the film, directed by David Fincher ("The Social Network"). But, if you haven't read the best-selling novel on which "Gone Girl" is based, we're not gonna tell you a thing.

In the trailer, we see flashes of the film:

-Amy and Nick are smiling.
-Then later we see them fighting.
-People have flashlights drawn, searching for the missing Amy.
-There's some red undies.
-Amy kisses another man.
-Nick looks horrified.
-Nick slams his fist into some glass.
-Nick runs from a horde of reporters.
-There's a clue! (Literally, "Clue One" is written on a card.)
-There's also a secret compartment.
-Then… There's Amy… dead!

Wait. What?

Without spoiling any of it, we can tell you that none of the new trailer is shown in sequential order. There are so many twists and turns in "Gone Girl," you really have to read the story (or wait for the movie) to see how it unfolds.

"Gone Girl" hits theaters on Oct. 3.
