Cowabunga! First Look at ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’

Dust off those old nunchakus and order a pizza (or four), because the Heroes in a Half Shell are back on the big screen courtesy of producer Michael Bay in complete and total Michael Bay-ish mode.

The best thing about the trailer? The Turtles are... adorable in CG. And they're in full-on Turtle mode, crackin' wise and having fun.

Donatello and Raphael have a great action sequence in which their shells double as snow saucers, Leonardo gets at least one hero pose, and go-to jokester Michelangelo has a great bit with April (Megan Fox): "Woah. It's just a mask, don't freak out."

Rest assured — these Ninja Turtles are indeed mutants and not aliens from outer space or whatever that nonsense was back in March 2012. In fact, the teaser is almost completely dedicated to reassuring fans that the origin of the turtles has more or less stayed the same — they were, indeed, "transformed from the norm by the nuclear goop," to quote Partners in Kryme.

These Turtles weren't really an accident, though. As explained by Eric Sachs (William Fichtner, awesome as always), the reptilian martial artists were the result of genetic experiments (involving a green liquid, natch) in an attempt to "create heroes."

Because "people want heroes ... MISS O'NEIL!" Yes, we get to see Megan Fox as April, though it's unclear which incarnation of the character she'll be playing: a lab assistant or news reporter. Sachs mentions her father as a partner in his experiments, which leans toward the former, though her snapping pics whilst the Turtles do their thing against a bunch of masked baddies (the Foot Clan?) in the NYC subway suggests the latter.

Oh, and in case you're wondering who this 'Eric Sachs' is ... look fast and you'll see him standing before a very familiar-looking helmet in one shot. Beware the Shredder!

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" opens in theaters on Aug. 8, dudes.
