Robert Pattinson Gets the Sparkly Beat Out of Him in 'The Rover' Trailer

We have proof Robert Pattinson doesn't always play the coolest, prettiest, sparkliest guy on the block.

The "Twilight" alum, known for being the dreamboat leading man, goes against type in the first full trailer for the post-apocalyptic road thriller "The Rover."

Here, R.Pattz stars as Reynolds, a member of a roving gang of thieves in an Australian Outback that has devolved to "Mad Max" levels of crime and anarchy — without the added bonus of having cool tricked-out war vehicles and characters with names like "The Humungus." Reynolds is wounded and left behind when his cohorts, including his brother, Henry (Scoot McNairy), steal a car which happens to be the last possession that matters to our burned-out, bad-ass hero, Eric (Guy Pearce).

Pattinson spends most of the trailer being intimidated by the seething Pearce, a victim role that's a far cry from the sexy vampire he played in the "Twilight" movies, the dashing rogue he played in "Water for Elephants" (2011), and the promiscuous billionaire playboy he portrayed in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" (2012). Sporting an American accent in "Rover," Pattinson is wide-eyed and freaked out here, an unlucky bastard who eventually wins the protective sympathy of his kidnapper as they go after Pearce's stolen ride.

Early Thursday morning, the film was named an official selection for a midnight screening at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, which takes place in May.

The teaser for "The Rover," released in January (below), showcased the film's moody atmosphere but explored next to nothing about the plot. Now, the longer trailer makes writer-director David Michôd ("Animal Kingdom")'s vision very clear while serving up more startling images and sudden violence. The comparisons to "Mad Max" have already begun and will continue, though this new look reveals a much more somber and serious film than its pulpy predecessor — and one that makes for yet another interesting project in Robert Pattinson's post-"Twilight" career.

"The Rover" will hit theaters on June 13.
