'When the Game Stands Tall': Even the Longest Winning Streak Must End

Everything you need to know about high school coaching legend Bob Ladouceur boils down to two numbers: 151 and 399.

The former is the number of games Coach Ladouceur's De La Salle Spartans won on their way to the longest winning streak in sports history, which lasted from 1992 to 2003. It takes a great leader to orchestrate such lasting greatness.

The latter is the amount of career wins Ladouceur notched before retiring last year after 34 seasons. To retire one shy of the 400 mark shows numbers aren't everything to the coach. (Or at least round numbers aren't.)

While Ladouceur's career is synonymous with winning, the movie based upon his life is actually more about losing. As seen in our exclusive trailer above, "When the Game Stands Tall" deals with what happens when a team that has won 151 straight can't pull off No. 152.

"Losing the streak tested us all," says Ladouceur in the trailer, as portrayed by Jim Caviezel ("Passion of the Christ"), an actor familiar with playing inspirational leaders. Indeed, Ladouceur and his team would be tested in the time that followed that pivotal loss, including the shooting death of running back Terrence Kelly (Stephan James) and Ladouceur suffering a heart attack.

But as Ladouceur also says in trailer, "We need to stand back up and find our way again."

Though the way wasn't always easy, Ladouceur refused to give up after that season of loss. He perservered, retiring on his own terms at the beginning of 2013 as the winningest coach in California high school history (by percentage) with a 399-25-3 record and 20 unbeaten seasons.

"It's not about the streak, or being the all-time winningest," said Ladoucer upon retiring. "I appreciate the benchmark and the recognition of the long haul and my hard work, but it's about being a positive part of so many young kids' lives."

In 34 years of teaching and coaching at De La Salle (in Concord, California), Ladouceur positively impacted many, including alums who made it to the NFL like former Pro-Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew and Super Bowl-winning receiver Amani Toomer.

"When the Game Stands Tall," co-starring Laura Dern, Michael Chiklis, Clancy Brown, and Alexander Ludwig, opens wide Aug. 22.
