Blake Lively Wore a $5,000 Gown With $60 Sneakers on the Red Carpet

Blake Lively hasn't been on the red carpet in over a year, so naturally, her return would be headline-worthy. While attending the New York premiere of Free Guy, Lively wore a sequin Prabal Gurung dress with cut-outs on the side. Though she looked stunning in the dress from the designer's Resort 2022 collection, that wasn't necessarily news-worthy — after all, she always looks stunning. It's actually the secret accessory she revealed on her Instagram story that got the entire Internet talking.

The post was a simple photo of Lively wearing an ears-wide smile on her face while hiking up her gown to expose a pair of white platform Converse sneakers. Considering the fact that they were mostly untied — plus her expression and parking lot backdrop — they seem to be the shoes she changed into, rather than the ones she wore for the entirety of the night. Although her gown did have a train that covered her feet entirely, so we'll never know the truth.

But it's no secret that a pair of pumps are painful, especially when you're a celebrity standing for hours on a red carpet. Lively has also always been relatable, so her affinity for a comfort sneaker as classic as a pair of Converse makes sense. Plus, it really is the summer of sneakers: Platform Converse have been trending on social media and supermodels have started swapping out their sandals for sneakers. And there's no doubt styling a price-upon-request-only dress (that we know retails for just about $5,000) with $60 sneakers is a power move.

While Lively's look makes us wish we could travel back in time and steal her styling tips for our prom, you don't need an occasion to wear this look. Sure, most of us don't have the budget for a sequin Prabal Gurung just because, but styling a wedding guest dress with Converse sneakers is a great way to get more use out of clothing we may consider too fancy for everyday wear. And in the spirit of the Gossip Girl reboot, that kind of look is exactly what would make Serena van der Woodsen proud.
