#BlackPantherSoLit and beyond: Cast of Marvel's megahit reveals favorite 'Black Panther' memes

Black Panther is the most tweeted-about movie in the world in 2018 — and was probably pretty high up there last year too.

Marvel’s new megahit has been all the rage on social media since it was first announced in 2014. It started to really take off as it got closer and closer to theaters in 2017 with the launch of the popular hashtag #BlackPantherSoLit and countless memes launched by delirious fans (with approximately 27 percent of those referencing Coming to America, by our unscientific count).

The true breadth of Black Panther tributes was evident when we asked the cast to name their favorites at the film’s Los Angeles press day (watch above). “There are so many,” Lupita Nyong’o marveled.

Nyong’o’s top pick, though, was a Facebook video from @BobbyJOnline called “Black Folks Going to See Black Panther,” in which a man drops a seemingly endless amount of snacks and other foods into a tote bag. “It was hilarious.”

Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) was partial to a video posted by @Trestunnah imagining how fans would be rolling up to the theater dancing. “I wanted to go to Uganda just to re-create that,” he said with a laugh.

Danai Gurira, meanwhile, appreciated all those Coming to America parallels, and the idea that moviegoers would show up at theaters in Zamunda-esque traditional African clothing. “I hope people do dress up,” Nyong’o said, to which Gurira added: “I feel like definitely people will; I have so little doubt.”

She was right.

Black Panther is playing in theaters now.
