‘Black in Sac’ events: Mixers, nightlife, African Marketplace, art galleries

It is the 13th week of Black in Sac event listings. They’re made possible by your posts, emails and Google Form entries. We appreciate your listings and thank you for continuing to allow us to highlight events in Sacramento.

There are plenty of things to do this weekend. We’ve got you covered this week between Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Take advantage of all the fun things to do in Sacramento over the weekend and upcoming week.

Here’s a list of things you can invite your friends and family to do over the next seven days.

First Friday Red Dress and Red Tie Holiday Mixer

This Friday, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., is a holiday mixer hosted by the California Black Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Sac Cultural Hub, KDEE 97.5 FM and THE HUB Magazine.

They are inviting business-minded individuals to come out and network. The attire is a red dress or red tie. The mixer will be held in Old Sacramento at The Original House of Soul, located at 900 Second St.

The event will feature a “White Elephant” business gift exchange. Attendees are encouraged to bring an inexpensive wrapped gift under $25. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a live jazz band, appetizers and a bar. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets are available through their Eventbrite link.

Children’s Literacy Book Drive

Nonprofit organization Escape Velocity Resources Foundation, Inc. is asking for donations to their Children’s Literacy Book Drive through Dec. 15.

They are accepting new and gently used African-American baby, children’s and young adult books. Donations can be dropped off at All Things Literacy Books & More Bookstore, located at 2251 Florin Rd., Suite 113.

The following times are their available drop off times.

  • Wednesday, Noon to 4 p.m.

  • Thursday, Noon to 5 p.m.

  • Saturdays, Noon to 5 p.m.

Tiger

Tiger, located at 722 K St., is continuing to keep downtown Sacramento’s nightlife scene lively. It’s “Kali Uchis vs Summer Walker’‘ night for “Purr” Thursdays. Expect DJ sets from DJ Eddy, DJ Genetixx, and DJ Jay, all night from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Love Fridays is their R&B night from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. There will be live music by local artist Julian Cunningham, better known by his artist name, Jamal Tru and Hayez, the band, who all will also perform on Saturday night for “Filthy Gorgeous Saturdays” from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Eighty-Eleven Bar and Grill

Eighty-Eleven Bar and Grill is located at 8011 Florin Rd.

Stop by on Friday or Saturday and celebrate Sagitarrius season with owner Robert Logan. There is a cover.

On Sundays they have free entry, no cover for their “$7 Dollar Sundays” where guests can enjoy the Sunday NFL games with premium drinks for $7. Happy hour is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

African Marketplace

The African Marketplace is an exposé of Black-owned products, provided by Black-owned businesses and vendors. The event occurs on every first and third Saturday of the month, from noon to 6 p.m.

Vendors showcase their products, which range from books, jewelry, food, catering services, a farmer’s market, apparel, hair and oral care, and much more.

This expo has over 30 different vendors in each pop-up.

It was the mission of James E. West, Sr. known as “Brother Ra” to the community, to bring Black culture and business to the neighborhood and to showcase talented and dedicated residents.

Join them this Saturday, Dec. 4, located at 2251 Florin Rd.

Self-Defense Training presented by Our Streets Coalition

On Saturdays, Our Streets Coalition partners with Black Lives Matter (BLM) Sacramento and All-African People’s Revolutionary Party to teach self-defense.

On Saturday, they will teach their training class “Collective Organization Security Practices” from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m, at McClatchy Park, located at 3500 35th Ave.

They are inviting the community to learn how to protect themselves, their community, and de-escalate while gathering information. For more information visit the BLM Sacramento Facebook page.

In the past they have taught how to build a security plan and weapon defense training. There will not be Christmas and New Year’s weekends.

Roberts Family Development Center reopens

Roberts Family Development Center announced their Main Hall will have its grand re-opening on Saturday.

From noon to 4 p.m, Sacramento City Councilman Sean Loloee and Mayor Darrell Steinberg will be there to help welcome the community center and reintroduce the establishment to the community.

Faith J. McKinnie Gallery presents : Jupiter The Artist

The Faith J. McKinnie Gallery is a newly opened, Black-operated contemporary art gallery in midtown, on 1610 R St., in Rice Alley behind Device Brewing Co.

The gallery will host a solo exhibit showcasing the artwork and projects of Jupiter, the artist, through Jan. 2.

Jupiter says the show was created to focus on the gaze and perceptions that have been placed upon African American and Black people in this country. She gives Black figures the audacity to take space on canvases in their authenticity.

The gallery is open Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday it is open from noon to 4 p.m. FJM Gallery is also open by appointment. The event is free and open to the public.

Impound “An Evening of Networking” Mixer

On Saturday, Impound Comics is inviting all creatives to their business mixer from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m, at 1015 Ninth St.

This is a free event, however RSVP is mandatory and available through Eventbrite. The event will focus on painters, photographers, artists, writers, illustrators, models, designers, and more.

All professionals are invited to attend.

The Philharmonik at Streets Pub

The Philharmonik will be performing live at Streets Pub, 1804 J St., this Saturday. There will also be music by DJ Jaytwo before and after the show.

Expect good vibes, talent, food, and drinks. The event is free from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Ages 21 and up after 10 p.m.

My Urban Society Day Party

My Urban Society is hosting their Urban Exposure Vendor Pop Up and Day Party on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

The event will be held at Blue Cue, located at 1004 28th St. This free event is for local vendors and entrepreneurs to socialize and sell their products.

One of the vendors expected to be in attendance is the Groovy Tribe clothing brand.

Naija Boy Taco Tuesday at Ro Sham Beaux

The Naija Boy Taco Tuesday is a weekly event at Ro Sham Beaux, located at 2413 J St.

Rasheed Amedu is bringing West African flavor to Mexican cuisine every Tuesday, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Spectra karaoke on Wednesdays at Streets Pub

Spectra is a musician, artist, and an avid fan of karaoke.

She also hosts karaoke at Faces Nightclub, located 2000 K St., on Thursdays and Lighthouse Bar and Grill, located at W Capitol Avenue in West Sacramento, on Fridays and Saturdays.

Sac State Black Alumni Chapter Celebrates Black Creatives

The Sac State Black Alumni Chapter is hosting an evening of entertainment, connections, and refreshments at the Brickhouse Gallery on Dec. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Spoken word poet, Coon the Poet, will be performing live at the event, located at 2837 36th St.

The event is free for current Sac State students and $5 for admission to non-Sac State students. Registration and RSVP is available here.
