Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer Prep for a Custody Battle in the First 'Black or White' Trailer

The new family drama Black or White opens in select theaters on Friday for a very limited awards-season qualifying run. And just in time, we’re finally getting a better look at it with the first full trailer above. (The movie will open wider on Jan. 30.) The latest from the Upside of Anger writer-director Mike Binder premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer star as dueling grandparents at odds over the fate of their young bi-racial granddaughter Eloise (newcomer Jillian Estell). Costner’s gruff hard drinker has full custody of her after the death of both his daughter (the girl’s mother) and, more recently, his wife. Meanwhile, Spencer’s tough-talking granny makes a play for split custody.

Tonally, this first look makes the film appear to be more of a heart-warmer than a button-pusher, which could help its commercial appeal, but limit its Oscar chances.
