The bizarre way Dominic Cummings is involved in the #FreeBritney movement

The #FreeBritney movement has been gaining momentum for a long time, calling for pop icon Britney Spears’ conservatorship to end. In recent weeks Britney herself has spoken out in a public court testimony and she’s received support from the likes of Christina Aguilera, but a bizarre twist new in the tale is that Dominic Cummings (yep, Barnard Castle Dominic Cummings) has waded into the scenario.

Britney is currently going through a court appeal process to formally remove her father Jamie Spears as her conservator – something which means that - according to Britney's recent testimony – he’s in control of her finances and pretty much every aspect of her life.

One of the most recent court developments is that the star has been granted her request to hire her own attorney, rather than her court-appointed lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III who has handled her case since 2008. The change was welcomed by Britney, who posted on Instagram afterwards saying she was feeling blessed, along with a video of herself riding a horse and doing cartwheels.

"I feel GRATITUDE and BLESSED !!!! Thank you to my fans who are supporting me," she wrote. "You have no idea what it means to me be supported by such awesome fans !!!! God bless you all !!!!!"

Someone else who, weirdly, has responded to the news is Dominic Cummings, former close advisor to Boris Johnson best known for his lockdown trip to Barnard Castle. In a social media post he tagged Britney, giving his advice on next steps in her legal campaign.

“Now @britneyspears can hire own lawyers: please Britney team write/tweet to all in Congress, all @POTUS staff, all @GavinNewsom staff, judges’ staff challenging whether *they personally* support the *shocking* conservatorship laws. They won't & the tide will #FreeBritney RETWEET,” he wrote on Twitter this week.

It’s fair to say people were confused by the mastermind behind Brexit wading in on the #FreeBritney issue. From: “Wait, have you been hacked” to “Are you only interested in issues beginning with ‘br?’” the comments section was awash with Twitter users asking what on earth is going on.

Honestly, who knows? But certainly, Britney’s case is gaining momentum this year.

In June, Britney gave a public testimony and Variety reported how the mother-of-two shared how unhappy she is with her situation, saying: "I’ve lied and told the whole world 'I’m OK and I’m happy'... It’s a lie. I thought I just maybe if I said that enough maybe I might become happy. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised. But now I’m telling you the truth... I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day."

Britney's father and his legal team have always maintained they have acted with Britney's best interests at heart and that Jamie Spears was not motivated by money or power in any way. Through his lawyer, Jamie said he is sorry to see his daughter in so much pain and that he misses and loves her.

Now, Britney is waiting to hear whether the court will approve her request for her dad to be removed as her conservator and replaced by a certified public accountant named Jason Rubin.

Unfortunately, the legal process isn't the speediest and Britney is now not set to appear in court until 13 December.
