Bird busts out of zoo when tree crashes on enclosure — and ends up on California porch

A bird that escaped the Oakland Zoo when a tree fell on an aviary has been found in a resident’s front yard, California officials say.

Six birds fled when high winds toppled a tree onto the zoo’s African Savanna aviary, tearing the mesh enclosure, on Tuesday, March 21, the zoo said on Facebook.

Three superb starlings and a hooded vulture were later recovered, but two pied crows from Africa remained on the loose, zoo officials later reported.

On Sunday, March 26, a resident several miles from the zoo noticed Deauville, one of the pied crows, in her front yard, the zoo reported.

She notified the zoo and with the help of two keepers lured Deauville onto her front porch and then inside her home, where he was recovered and returned to the zoo.

Now only a second pied crow named Diego remains on the loose, zoo officials said.

Pied crows have strong white markings around their necks and breasts that distinguish them from other crows.

The zoo asks anyone who spots Diego to call a rescue hotline at 510-703-8986. Do not try to catch him as “he’s a very shy bird that startles easily,” according to the zoo.

The Oakland Zoo also announced Monday, March 27, that Lisa, a beloved 46-year-old African elephant at the zoo, has been euthanized after lingering age-related ailments.
