Big changes in store for two WBTV news anchors in Charlotte

WBTV is making big changes to its morning and afternoon-evening news anchor teams, giving longtime station personalities Alex Giles and John Carter new roles.

Starting Monday, Jan. 30, Giles will join Mary King to co-anchor “WBTV News This Morning,” and Carter will co-anchor “WBTV News” at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. with Shevaun Bryan, the station announced Friday.

On Twitter Friday, Giles said he was “grateful for the opportunities I continue to get here at @WBTV_News.”

“I’ll miss seeing you!” he told his fellow WBTV evening team members Shevaun Bryan, Molly Grantham and Jamie Boll.

WBTV new teams

In a statement on WBTV.com, station vice president and general manager Michelle Robinson Harper said WBTV is “excited about the energy, experience, and value that these new teams will give viewers each day.”

Carter and Giles have a combined three decades at the station, according to WBTV.

“They each have such deep roots in our community, extensive market knowledge, and truly exemplify WBTV’s ‘On Your Side’ mission,” WBTV News Director Molly Kelleher said in the statement.

Both anchors look forward to their new roles, according to the station.

‘Deep understanding of our community’

“I have a deep understanding of our community and have been fortunate to cover stories from every county within our market and look forward to sharing my insights and experience with viewers each evening,” Carter said in the WBTV statement.

Said Giles: “I’m so grateful for this new opportunity and look forward to continuing to help our morning viewers start their day the way John has for so many years.”

“All the love for this @WBTV_News crew!” King said on Twitter at 8:26 a.m. Friday. “My buddy @JohnCarterWBTV is headed to the other side of 5 o’clock with the fabulous @finessebryan & all smiles @AlexGilesNews will be on the desk for your mornings! So grateful for this team.”
