We can all agree that, like a fine wine, Beyoncé just gets better with age. And the 28-time Grammy winner agrees: following her 40th birthday earlier this month, Knowles shared a handwritten note with fans on her website.

In it, she reflected on how she’s grown over the years and revealed ‘this has absolutely been the best I’ve felt in my life.’

‘This is the first year that I really understand what it means to be alive and to live in the moment. It’s the first time that I have an understanding of how fragile life truly is, how hard life can be at times, and therefore how important it is to stop and smell the roses during the good times. I thought I knew that at 21 or 30…but I didn’t.

‘I’m finally giving myself permissions to enjoy the seeds I’ve worked so hard to plant my whole life.’

The singer went on to say that she wholeheartedly disagrees with those who see ageing as an indication of weakness. ‘Whoever tried to condition women to feel that we are supposed to feel old or unhappy when we turn 40 got it ALL THE WAY F’d UP,’ she wrote in capitals.

Beyoncé also took the chance to say thank you to her devoted fans, ‘for the time and level of detail it took to organize such beautiful tributes… I cried tears of joy and was covered in chilly bumps.

‘Most of y’all met me when I was 15, and we have grown up together. You bring soooo much joy into my life. I hope my art can continue to bring a little joy into yours.’

She finished her note by signing off ‘I love you deep, deep, deep’ and with a little sketch of a bee – a nod to her nickname.

Beyoncé has been celebrating her birthday all month long with husband Jay-Z on a mega-yacht in Italy, which she posted about on Instagram.

In an A-list video released on her birthday, stars including Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, Kerry Washington, Jennifer Hudson and Laverne Cox celebrated the singer's milestones. ‘You’ve given me and so many others permission to be free to embrace all that we are,’ Cox said. ‘You’ve given us a blueprint for excellence: that when we think you can’t surpass yourself, you do.’
