A federal judge on Friday barred Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes from entering Washington, D.C., without the court's approval after President Donald Trump commuted the extremist group leader's 18-year prison sentence in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, who oversaw the seditious conspiracy trial of Rhodes and other Oath Keepers, issued the order two days after Rhodes visited Capitol Hill, where he met with at least one lawmaker, chatted with others and defended his actions the day of the riot.

New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers finished testifying Friday in his assault and battery trial by denying he choked or shoved his accuser. Peppers, who first took the witness stand on Thursday, has been on trial this week on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. A woman testified Thursday that Peppers grabbed her by the neck, slammed her against the wall and pushed her down the stairs after another man called her cellphone several times while they were in bed.

Riviera tournament moving to Torrey Pines in San Diego because of LA wildfires
The PGA Tour is relocating the Genesis Invitational out of wildfire-ravaged Los Angeles, announcing Friday it will be held Feb. 13-16 on the South course at Torrey Pines in San Diego with an emphasis on relief initiatives for victims of the fires. The tour said the $20 million signature event hosted by Tiger Woods would return to Riviera Country Club next year. Riviera was not damaged, but it is located in the Pacific Palisades community that has been devasted by fires that have killed 28 people and destroyed more than 14,000 structures in Greater Los Angeles since Jan. 7.

German opposition leader plans migration proposals to parliament in risky pre-election move
Germany's opposition leader said Friday his party will bring motions to toughen migration policy to parliament next week in one of its last sessions before the country's election, a risky move if they go to a vote and pass with the help of a far-right party. Friedrich Merz, whose center-right Union bloc leads polls ahead of Germany's Feb. 23 election, vowed Thursday to bar people from entering the country without proper papers and to step up deportations if he is elected chancellor. On Friday, he said that the Union will bring motions to parliament next week “that correspond solely to our conviction” and added: “We will introduce them independently of who approves them.”
