Today's historic inauguration was a long time in the making. No, seriously y'all. It was a long, long time in the making. This needs to be fact checked officially, but the previous administration seems to have lasted four scores and seven years, the election season lasted one full decade, and the period between the election and the inauguration of Joe Biden was approximately eighty-four years, the same amount of time old Rose waited before telling her story aboard the Titanic.

But Inauguration Day has come, and while the pandemic and a general unease about domestic terrorism are keeping scores of people from in-person attendance in Washington D.C., the world is watching from home. And when we're all at home, phones in hand, we hit social media to offer jokes, sweet sentiments, and hot takes about Lady Gaga's giant golden dove brooch that makes your entire grandmother's jewelry collection seem immediately understated.

The gist of Wednesday's inauguration was an overwhelmingly hopeful one. While now former-President Donald Trump opted to take Air Force One down to Florida, the crowd of both Democrats and Republicans flooded to the Capitol to watch Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden be sworn into office. We plebeians at home made jokes and breathed a sigh of relief that, for this day, those jokes were a little less existential.

Welcome to this new Republic: one that has a woman of color as Vice President. A president whose speeches are equal parts inspiring and, frankly, run of the mill. Oh, and a rendition of "America, The Beautiful" that has, for some reason, been mashed up with "Let's Get Loud."

We did it, Joe.
