Benedict Cumberbatch discusses Doctor Strange’s role in Marvel Phase 4

Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ is just around the corner and according to star Benedict Cumberbatch it’s only the beginning for the character.

When Comicbook spoke to Cumberbatch himself, he was keen to hint at where his character could fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future, notably Phase 4.

“The first timer I saw it was last night at the world premiere … and it’s only by the end of the film that you go, ‘my god, this is the beginning.’ It’s an origin story of a superhero that’s going to be part of of all that.”

And while it’s unclear in which Marvel outings we will see Strange in in the future, the actor seemed confident that audiences will be seeing a lot more of him, which can only be a good thing. “We’re going to get a lot more, this is just the beginning,” the Brit said with confidence.

But where exactly will he fit into the MCU and what sort of influence can he have? “All over the place!” he claimed. “There’s a lot going on in this story which leads you to understand why he’ll play a key role in the next phase.”

‘Doctor Strange’ is arguably Marvel’s most experimental movie to date and more of a risk than, say, an Iron Man or Captain America movie. That said, with Cumberbatch’s name attached, a solid supporting cast and impressive footage that’s been released thus far, there’s every chance the movie could surprise us and do well at the box office, just like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Ant-Man’ did.

Fans will be hoping to see Strange pop up in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and its subsequent follow-up, and going by what Cumberbatch says they may just get their wish.

‘Doctor Strange’ is in UK cinemas from 25 October.
