Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reunite for Good Will Hunting live reading

Matt Damon reprised his titular role in ‘Good Will Hunting’ for a live reading of the film’s script on Friday night. But not to be outdone, Damon’s BFF and co-writer on ‘Good Will Hunting’ Ben Affleck also joined him on stage to play the supporting part of Chuckie Sullivan once again.

The one-off live performance of the lauded screenplay, which won Affleck and Damon the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award, was overseen by John Krasinksi as part of the Film Independent and New York Times live-read series.

According to People, Krasinski, who was born and raised in close proximity to ‘Good Will Hunting’s’ Boston setting, admitted that the movie was “unbelievably important” to him.

As John Krasinski announced the cast he revealed to the audience that he would be playing Will, revealing that it was his “life long dream.” Only for Matt Damon to bound on stage and declare that he “wasn’t really okay with that”. This immediately provoked a standing ovation from the gathered masses at New York University’s Skirball theatre.

The Guardian reported that Krasinksi consoled himself by preparing to take Ben Affleck’s role, insisting, “Chuckie’s a better role anyway,” only for Affleck to then strut into view and take it from him. The former ‘Office’ actor was instead reduced to being the narrator.

Which was particularly awkward as Krasinski had roped in his wife Emily Blunt to play Skylar, who was previously portrayed by Minnie Driver. This led Krasinski to alter some of the love scenes between Skylar and Will as he read out the stage directions.

After one intimate moment Emily Blunt remarked, “It was really good!” to which Krasinski responded with, “You’re really going to take Jason Bourne over Jim from ‘The Office’?”

Joining Affleck, Blunt, Damon, and Krasinski on stage was Margot Martindale, who took the part of Sean Maguire, which Robin Williams won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for. Krasinski revealed that he gave the part to a woman because “no man can ever do what [Williams did.”

Tom McCarthy, the director of ‘Spotlight’, portrayed Professor Lambeau, ‘Good Will Hunting’s’ producer Harvey Weinstein appeared as a psychologist, while Keegan-Michael Key and Daveed Diggs rounded out the cast.
