Bellator 289 results: Patchy Mix puts Magomed Magomedov to sleep with guillotine, punches ticket to grand prix final

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – One half of the Bellator bantamweight grand prix final is set.

Patchy Mix turned in an incredible performance against Magomed Magomedov, taking the judges out of the equation by putting his opponent to sleep from a deep submission.

The bantamweight grand prix semifinal bout was part of the Bellator 289 main card at Mohegan Sun Arena and aired on Showtime. The fight was scheduled for five rounds, but Mix (17-1 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) would only need two.

Mix looked to establish his offense early by controlling the center of the cage and putting together punching combinations. The height and reach advantage proved to be an issue for Magomedov (19-3 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) to close the distance to land punches of his own, so he looked to bring the fight to the canvas, but was countered by a guillotine choke attempt from Mix. After getting back to the feet, the next pair of takedown attempts from Magomed were unsuccessful.

In the second, Mix continued to have success on the feet, landing sharp punches and a solid head kick early in the round. Magomedov later shot for a takedown, but was easily countered again into a guillotine. This time, Mix had the choke in much deeper than the first round. After adjusting, he sinched it in even tighter, prompting referee Dan Miragliotta to check on Magomedov, who went out from the choke.

The official time of the stoppage was 2:39.

“I feel normal right now, this is the position I should be,” Mix said during his post-fight interview. “… You rest assured, I’m coming for that f*cking title!”

With the win, Mix advances to the grand prix final, where he will face the winner of Raufeon Stots vs. Danny Sabatello, which serves as the night’s main event. His current win streak includes stoppages of Albert Morales and James Gallagher, and a unanimous decision nod over Bellator champ Kyoji Horiguchi.
