Belen cross-country qualifies for nationals. Plus basketball, soccer, wrestling, wakeboarding

The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team, running under the team name Miami Havana, finished second at the Nike Southeast Regional Championships in Cary, North Carolina.

The Wolverines qualified for nationals.

Belen scored 111 points at regionals, placing second behind Tennessee’s Farragut High School at 105 points.

Joshua Ruiz, a junior, finished first for Belen and third overall with a personal best 5K time of 15 minutes 7 seconds. Following closely behind Joshua was his brother Joey Ruiz, also a junior, running 15:27 for 10th overall. In third for Belen was 8th grader Marcelo Mantecon.

Marcelo will be the only 8th grader in the country to compete at nationals.

The Southeast Region is composed of 11 states. The top two teams earn an all-expenses-paid trip to Portland, Oregon, to compete at the Nike National Cross-Country Championship, also known as NXN.

Only the top 20 teams in the country (one being Belen) will compete at nationals on Dec. 3. This is only the second time in Belen cross-country history that one of its teams advanced to nationals. The first was in 2011.

More cross-country

Belen Jesuit cross-country coach Frankie Ruiz was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 3A Boys’ Cross-Country Coach of the Year.

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth. This marks the 31st year of these unique awards as they honor the state’s top athletes and coaches in all 30 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports.

The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.

Originally from Mexico City, Larios, 16, is considered a wakeboarding Junior Pro. She has been in the sport 10 years and began training professionally and competing internationally at age 14.

She trains three times a week after school. On days when she is not on the water, she is at the gym. Alternating weekend training between Miami and Orlando, she is preparing for the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in 2023.

Larios belongs to the AfriKids Club at Palmer Trinity and wants to try out for basketball after wakeboarding season.
