Matt Long has the ideal name for a receiver.
It wouldn’t work if he went by Matt Short, because his game is all about the deep ball.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Vista del Lago High School junior who sports a 4.0 grade-point average is averaging 18.5 yards per reception, and he has 38 grabs for 702 yards and 12 trips to the end zone, including strikes of 74 and 81 yards from his quarterback, Johnny Koett.
Long is The Bee’s Prep of the Week for what he did against Sacramento in a Capital Athletic League opener, and because he had a lot of voting friends. Long had nine catches for 145 yards and three scores in a 35-21 victory over the Dragons. He then garnered more than 18,000 votes in the poll that generated more than 46,000 votes.
Long warmed up after a slow season opener in which he had three catches and 45 yards and no trips to the end zone against Manteca. Since then: five catches for 130 yards and three scores against Ponderosa; 11 for 212 and four against Granite Bay; 10 for 170 and two against Placer.
