‘Beauty and the Beast’ Will Feature Disney’s First Openly Gay Moment on Screen

In an interview with Attitude magazine, Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon revealed LeFou is gay and that his much-anticipated film will feature Disney’s first gay moment on screen. For those unfamiliar, LeFou (Josh Gad) is the sidekick of antagonist Gaston (Luke Evans).

“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” said Condon. “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. … It is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

Condon, who is himself openly gay, praised Gad’s acting “Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it,” he said.

Attitude is a British gay lifestyle magazine. Its editor in chief, Matt Cain, praised Disney for its inclusivity. “It’s only a first step towards creating a cinematic world that reflects the one in which many of us are now proud to live,” he said in part. “But it’s a step in the right direction and I applaud Disney for being brave enough to make it.”
