Battlefield developer DICE confirmed that Battlefield 6, the heavily anticipated military shooter, will launch this holiday season and is being worked on by the “biggest team ever” for the franchise.

Oskar Gabrielson, General Manager at DICE, revealed the news via a post on Electronic Arts’ webpage.

“We’re really excited to have the biggest Battlefield development team ever working on our console and PC game for this Holiday season,” Gabrielson wrote. “Working with more world-class development studios within Electronic Arts, we have our biggest team ever on a Battlefield game for console and PC. Our friends at Criterion and DICE LA are working with us on our shared vision for the game, while the team in Gothenburg is taking technology in the game to the next level. Together, we are creating a jaw-dropping experience for you to enjoy later in 2021.”

Throughout his post, Gabrielson emphasized that the upcoming Battlefield will feature “massive” player counts. The Battlefield series is most well known for its 64-player matches which span across enormous, sprawling maps. Gabrielson’s post implied that fans might be seeing the 128-player count servers they’ve been asking for.

Along with the confirmation that Battlefield 6 will launch sometime in the 2021 holiday season, Gabrielson revealed that the team is also working on a mobile version of Battlefield due out in 2022.

Battlefield and Call of Duty are often described as direct competitors. Both series launched around the same time — Battlefield 1942 was released in 2002 and Call of Duty in 2003. The two franchises also began as World War II games and eventually branched out with titles set during the Cold War, contemporary times and even the future.

The upcoming Battlefield has some big shoes to fill. Battlefield V, the most recent game in the series, received lukewarm reviews from both critics and fans.

Other than Gabrielson’s post, there’s little information on Battlefield 6. There are no teasers, trailers and not even an official title. However, Gabrielson assured fans that they can expect more information “soon” with a cheeky wink emoji.
