Basic Brake Upgrades Make the New Subaru BRZ a Track Day Beast

We drove the new-for-2022 Subaru BRZ last year and absolutely loved it. One of very few truly affordable sports cars still on the market, it's the perfect blend of usability and enjoyment you just can't find for a reasonable price anymore (unless you want a Miata).

But if there's one thing we had to pick that we didn't like about the new BRZ, it's the brakes. They're perfectly adequate for street use, but push them for more than a few laps on a race track, and they quickly begin to fade. With just a few minor upgrades, though, the 2022 BRZ is perfectly suited for continuous track abuse.

The Zygrene YouTube channel found that out first-hand when they took their new BRZ to a track day at Thunderhill in California after installing a set of Powerstop track day pads and some Motul DOT 4 brake fluid. Without any other mods the car performed wonderfully on track, without any fade through each 15-minute session.

The naturally aspirated flat-four engine, now new and improved with more displacement and more horsepower over the prior-generation car, is happy to rev over and over again, while the compliant suspension handles fast sweepers and tighter bends with ease. And because the factory Michelin Pilot Sport 4s aren't very sticky, the BRZ is eager to get sideways on exit in a safe, controllable manner. Is there much more you can ask for in an affordable track car you can drive to work every day? We don't think so.
