Even though we've been waiting patiently all year for the warmer weather to finally arrive, Canadian summers can be uncomfortably hot — especially if you don't have air conditioning.

Summer temperatures increase the risk of heat stroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration — and the most at-risk people for heat stroke are seniors and people with chronic conditions who live alone and don't have air conditioning, which is still the best way to prevent heat-related illnesses or deaths. That means having some kind of air conditioning is more than just a luxury.

Although central air may not be feasible for everyone, a portable air conditioning unit can help decrease the risk of over-heating and provide a more comfortable environment for your loved ones.

Amazon Canada shoppers are already investing in the Basein Portable Air Conditioner, which has been rising in the ranks on the online retailer's Movers & Shakers list.

What is it?

Basein’s portable, personal use air conditioner uses a 700ml water tank to offer four cooling speeds, four timing sets (two, four, six and eight hours) and two different power modes (natural wind and cool wind) to help create a cooler, more comfortable environment.

What people are saying

Basein's lightweight air conditioner currently has a 3.4-star rating. Although it doesn't use any chemicals to cool the air like an air conditioner, it's a solid option to help you stay cool and comfortable.

"My workspace in my home office is getting warmer now that spring is here and I don't want to AC my whole house just to cool down one room," one shopper wrote. "This portable air conditioner works so well. It plugs into the USB C port on my laptop and doesn't use much power at all. Its very energy efficient. I mostly use the fan only mode, which works very well. But when it gets too warm in my room I just pour a glass of water in the unit and put it on AC mode and it cools me down really quickly. I also think the colour changing light feature is pretty cool too and makes it look ultra modern."

"Perfect for the upcoming summer season," another Amazon customer wrote. "It came well-packaged. The size is just about right. You can put it on your desk, it doesn't look overwhelming for its size. You can also bring this along for trips because it is not as bulky as others. It is easy to use, just follow the manual for the needed water level. It is really not that cold as an air conditioner, but it is cool to the feeling because of the cooling mist."

Verdict

If you're looking for a portable air conditioner to keep at your desk, near your bed, or next to you while you watch TV, Basein's model might just be for you.

This personal use air conditioner isn't strong enough to cool down a large room or area, but is a helpful solution for anyone looking for an affordable way to keep cool this summer.
