Yahoo Movies 'Barry' Trailer: A Young Barack Obama Comes of Age
This past summer’s Southside With You recounted, in fictional fashion, the first date of future President Barack Obama and future First Lady Michelle Robinson. If that well-received work didn’t quite satisfy your appetite for early-years portraits of America’s current commander-in-chief, Netflix has just what you’re craving with Barry, which just released its debut trailer. Directed by Vikram Gandhi, Barry shines a light on Obama as a 20-year-old attending college at Columbia University in New York. And as evidenced by its first full-length promo, it will use that time period to investigate the various formative experiences that helped shape him into the politician, and then world leader, he’d eventually become. There’s nothing particularly groundbreaking about the footage promised by this first look — which depicts Obama trying to define his own identity as a biracial man with ancestral ties to both Kansas and Kenya — but it apparently features a standout lead performance from Australian newcomer Devon Terrell, whom Variety’s Owen Gleiberman says, “nails the clipped vibe of awareness, and a youthful version of the stare, to an uncanny degree.”
With Obama set to leave office in January, now’s an ideal time to wax nostalgic about a time before Trump with Barry, which — after a successful debut at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival — will be exclusively available on Netflix beginning Dec. 16.
