Barbie getting IMAX release with new post-credit sequence

Barbie is heading to IMAX screens, and she's bringing a little something extra with her.

Warner Bros has announced that the pink-hued fantasy comedy will get a one-week run on IMAX screens throughout North America and select international territories starting on September 22.

The limited release will also include never-before-seen post-credits footage selected by director Greta Gerwig.

"We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all," the filmmaker said in a statement.

"As a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy."

Warner Bros executives Jeff Goldstein and Andrew Cripps added: "If there was one thing missing in this winning Barbie strategy, it was being able to put Greta’s singular vision on premium IMAX screens over the uber-competitive summer corridor.

"We are so pleased to give them a chance to see Barbie, whether for the first or fifth time, in such an experiential format as IMAX."

Barbie has grossed a whopping $1.29 billion at the global box office since its July 21 debut, and it's on track to surpass The Super Mario Bros Movie ($1.36 billion) as the highest-grossing film of the year.

It's also the highest-grossing live-action film of all time by a female director, as well as Warner Bros' second-biggest release of all time, trailing only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's total of $1.32 billion.

Barbie is out in cinemas now, and heads to IMAX screens on September 22.
