'Baby Driver' Blu-ray clip shows just how many musicians made cameos (exclusive)

How writer-director Edgar Wright went to painstaking lengths to set his action to carefully curated music cues in the summer hit Baby Driver has gotten a lot of attention, and rightfully so.

Less notice, however, has been paid to the number of actual musicians who showed up in front of the camera. Ansel Elgort, Jamie Foxx, and Eiza González are all legit recording artists, Lily James proved her mettle by singing in the film, and Kevin Spacey, remember, once played (and crooned as) Bobby Darin in the 2004 biopic Beyond the Sea. And that’s just the central cast.

In a clip from the Blu-ray bonus materials, Wright name-drops all the musicians who appeared in the film (watch exclusively above).

There’s Flea, a Red Hot Chili Pepper and Big Lebowski Nihilist No. 2, as one of Baby’s early heist buddies. Electro-pop songstress Sky Ferreira turns up in flashbacks as Baby’s late mama. Singer-writer-ASCAP chief Paul Williams channels his inner illegal arms dealer. Atlanta hip-hop ambassadors Big Boi and Killer Mike dropped by the set to have a ball as background players in a scene with Spacey’s crime boss, Doc.

And, as Wright pointed out in a recent Q&A, Jon Spencer of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion both opens and closes the film, first as “Bellbottoms” sets the tone for the initial car chase, and later when he cameos as a prison guard escorting Baby.

In summary: Somehow this movie had even more music cred than you thought.

Baby Driver is now on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD.
