Avalanche bring back Carl Soderberg in trade with Blackhawks

The Colorado Avalanche have acquired forward Carl Soderberg from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forwards Josh Dickinson and Ryder Rolston.

This marks Soderberg's second stint with the Avalanche, as he spent four seasons with the club from 2015-16 to 2018-19.

The speedy center, who recorded seven goals and 15 points in 34 games with Chicago in 2021, fits perfectly into the Avalanche's hyper-speed offense, with the team leading almost every shot creation and possession metric this season, per Natural Stat Trick. The 35-year-old has posted poor possession and shot-creation numbers this season but will almost certainly benefit from superior linemates in Colorado.

Soderberg is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2021 season. Chicago will not retain any of Soderberg's salary, The Athletic's Peter Baugh reports.

Dickinson has played sparingly in the ECHL throughout the '21 season, while Rolston, the son of former Stanley Cup champion Brian Rolston, has notched six points in 28 games at the NCAA level for Notre Dame.

It's been a busy few weeks for the Avalanche, who have made several moves ahead of the deadline. Colorado acquired goaltender Devan Dubnyk from San Jose, defenseman Patrik Nemeth from Detroit, and netminder Jonas Johansson from Buffalo within the last month.
